Go Green at HBMS!

What does it mean to "Go Green?"

  • What steps has HBMS taken to go green?
  • What other ideas do you have for improving our go green efforts at HBMS?
  • What impact will it have on our school community, and the community at large?
  • Why is it important to go green?
*When you post an answer to each question, you must also find a website that will support your ideas or position for EACH question. Link the site with your answer please.

    1. I think that this is smart because when people just drink water and throw it away, they are wasting money and the world

      Delete
    2. This would help a lot because we are spending way to much money on water bottles and that the enviroment is getting worse and worse. They are even starting to dump garbage in the ocean wich is not go9od at all.

      Delete
    3. I think that is a good idea because people are wasting money to get a bring while they could out of the water fountin and save money

    4. we recycle with the bins and we throw away all the things that harm our envirment like paper soda bottles and cans.

  2. Something that HBMS does to improve our school community, is we can email our HW
If u do this, we can save paper and not waste ink. Lots of students have to print their HW but if we email it, then we can save paper and ink

    1. There's actually a downside to that, though, Claudia. Even though it's a good idea, some of us don't check our emails every single night. I, for one, don't.

The responsibility is our own, though.

      Delete
    2. YA but if u send it to teachers they probably check their emails a lot so it would be a good idea

      Delete
    3. There is also a problem with that to. Some kids may not have an e-mail address and some of do not have a computer or internet.

      Delete
    4. Hmm...If the teachers are up for it, then, I'd say that it's a good idea :)

    5. If the teachers are up for checking their emails every day, then it'd be a good idea.

I would like to add though, that there's the possibility that the email may not get sent to the teachers, therefore qualifying for a missing homework assignment.

      Delete
    6. Also, something can happen to your computer and it may not get sent. Viruses, crashes and scams can do this.

      Delete
    7. Do you think this would be a better point to keep going on "What steps has HBMS taken to go green?"

      Delete
    8. Though there are some positive attributes to emailing homework, the negative sides over rule them. Therefore, it is a bad idea.Teachers have to print the homework that is emailed to them at the school's printer. This is because they have to edit it and hand it back to a student for a grade. It is sometimes in lesson plans to look at grades and ask questions about mistakes made. When printing all the students homework in the school's printer, more ink is wasted that should be used for things like projects.

      Delete
    9. I think it is a good idea to email homework to teachers but if we do send emails for homework to teachers we all will have to have an email.

  4. I believe that if we use fire pits or fire places, we can cut back on gas that we use for radiators or other alternate source of heating. This could save us gas each time we use it. This could help because since gas is a natural resource, we can run out. Besides, people sometimes turn on radiators and leave them on. Finally, this can save people money. Please leave your opinion and reply. Thanks!!!!!

  5. HBMS is going green by having spirit days:
    ~cancelled stamps
    ~soda tabs
    ~card fronts
    ~stuffed animals
    ~etc.
This reduces waste because we no longer have to throw these items out when we no longer need them.

    3. It is a good thing our school is full of spirit so we can accomplish our goals of going green.

      Delete
    4. Yes, the drives are preventing more trash. If we work even harder at them, we can prevent more waste. However, some people just take the tabs off the soda bottles, and still throw them out. If people recycle the bottles, it's ok.

      Delete
    5. I think it's a good idea to give fronts of cards so the card will not be wasted.

      Delete
    6. I never realized that our spirit projects not only help others, but they help the environment. Now we just have to get everyone to participate to really make a difference!

    2. Making the plastic tray costs more than the stirophome containers. This is why we do not have plastic trays. Besides, we have such a big school, it would be so expensive!!!!

      Delete
    6. I agree with that, I mean where do you think they put all of the garbage???!!!!

      Delete
    7. I do agree that they probably do it to save money. However, if the plastic trays are used enough, money could be saved as well as the environment. Also, paper trays fall apart when hot food is placed on them. Why the elementary school does this and we don't? I don't know.....

  7. HBMS has gone green because we use smartbords then paper and we have bin recycling in every classroom and also in the lunchroom.

  8. What we can do to improve going green at HBMS is to:
    ~use automatic hand dryers or
    ~automatic towel dispensers or
    ~hand towels
This would save trees because we are not wasting paper towels as much. This also means less waste in landfills, etc.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, but as long as the hand towels are washed!

      Delete
    2. I don't think this is such a great idea..... Automatic hand dryers do not work nearly as well. Automatic towel dispensers don't save any paper... Just the trouble we take to get towels. Classic hand towels would collect TONS of germs that would be spread and more kids would get sick.

  9. HBMS has tried to take steps to improve in going green. Our community has bought smart boards so we dont have to write on paper as much. We also have bought recycled paper.

    1. I think the smart boards are a good idea because it will save all the work the teachers write on it, when the teachers tell the class to get out paper and pencil the paper will end up in the recicaling bins lateer and smart board are better because the student can play on the smart bord to learn

  13. GOING GREEN makes a huge impact in our school and in our community. When we go green, we take steps to save our Earth. Earth is the only place that can support life, but if we continue to treat the Earth as we normally do, one day our planet may no longer be safe. GOING GREEN saves the Earth from further damage and mends it from past damage. By doing this we ensure that the Earth is a safe place.

  14. It is important to go green because you can save Earth. By doing this, you are able to save energy, trees, and light. Lots of people participate in activities that are green. We should all pitch in together to save our planet.
Some ways we can improve going green are...
    -you can email homework
-use front and backs of papers
    -donating clothes
By doing some of these things we can help out our community and environment. Our world is being polluted and we need to save it. Everyday our planet is being weakened. If our community pitches in we can save our livly world.

  15. HBMS has taken many steps to improve the environment and "go green." We often are only allowed to print out our homework in the morning from the printers at school if it is an emergency. A few years ago, people used to freely print out as many random pictures and papers from the school printers, but now it is limited.

  16. One thing that HBMS has done to go green is opening or close windows during either the summer or winter time. During the summer time, teachers can open windows to let in cool air instead of air conditioners. During the winter time, we can keep the windows closed and have no heat so certain rooms dont become overheated.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. During the winter, we keep the windows closed but we have to have some heat or it will be too cold... But it's always really hot in certain rooms, so we should just decrease the heat and not totally take the heat away

      Delete
    2. This is true, but some teachers, open windows in the winter to coool down their rooms, which wastes money and electricity, for the dollars the school spends on heat is literally going out the window. This is not finacially smart, but it also so green.

  19. HBMS is alreay taking steps to go green by reusing papers in different classes. Many teachers have the same lessons for classes they have in different grades. Teachers have been saving paper and ink by telling students not to write on articles and other papers they use in class. At the end of class the teachers collect the papers and save them for the next class in which they are teaching the same lesson. This way instead of printing 60 copies of a story, the teacher only need to print 20. HBMS is being green already, but there are surely more ways to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I am actually impresed that the school has started to place recycling cans in 5the classrooms for all the paper that the students used but they needed to redo their papers this way the paper does't go into the trash cans and goes to the garbage dumps infesting and killing animals that may think its food.o i am very proud about the changes that have been made at the school.

  22. At HBMS we are going green by printing documents out double-sided and reducing the use of water cleaning out trays by using styrofoam trays. This is beneficial because when we print things out double-sided it leads to less paper being used for printing and more for saving for future use.

HBMS is going green in a variety of ways, but one of the ways is turning off lights. Whenever noone is in the room, teachers turn off the lights to conserve energy. If lights were left on, it would cost the school money that we don't have, and we would waste energy.

      1. to treat or process (used or waste materials) so as to make suitable for reuse: recycling paper to save trees.

      2.
to alter or adapt for new use without changing the essential form or nature of: The old factory is being recycled as a theater.

      3.
to use again in the original form or with minimal alteration: The governor recycled some speeches from his early days.

Waste, and how we choose to handle it, affects our world's environment—that's YOUR environment. The environment is everything around you including the air, water, land, plants, and man-made things. And since by now you probably know that you need a healthy environment for your own health and happiness, you can understand why effective waste management is so important to YOU and everyone else. The waste we create has to be carefully controlled to be sure that it does not harm your environment and your health.

  43. There are many ways that HBMS has taken to go green. One way that i remember from the school year are the earth assemblies we have had. The assemblies keep the students aware how much the earth has affected us. The earth has affected us in so mant ways, global warming is going on, the air is being poluted by those people who do not car-pool or hitch a ride from friends. THere are many other steps we can take but we are trying our best.

  44. high Bridge has take action buy haveing assembilies. they help to keep the students informes about what has happened to the earth. we have also had a special club to go down to the river. when we went to the river we helped to make sure that the river is still clean.
I think that we at High Bridge Middle School we should plant a bunch of trees in the front of the school. ir=t would be really cool. and in staid of us having earth day we chould have earth week. through out the week we should plant and clean up all over High Bridge

    2. In the elementary school, we had days for recycling at lunch. We don't now, though. So let's just use plastic containers everyday! Besides, they save us trips to walk over to the garbage cans.

  52. Our school should pick up all garbage they see because leaving it there is just as bad as throwing it away in the first place.

    1. true that, but throwing the stuff on the ground it worse

    2. Yeah, I think thats a good idea. Maybe sort of like that thing we did in enviormental club where we went on the Columbia Trail and picked up trash.

    1. Yeah, thats a really good idea. People should work to set up carpools. Maybe not the bikes, though, because High Bridge is so hilly. But the carpools are a good idea.

  58. We should really start a Enviormental club, or a recycling club, or something like that. That way, we could actully put some of the stuff we talked about into action! I mean, it wouldn't be that hard! If we could find a teacher and a bunch of students who wanted to do this, I'm sure it could work. It would also help educate the other students about the enviorment and how we can make our homes, school, and even town go green.
If we worked on this alot, maybe the club could even become a big part of student council. The club could give assemblies every new marking period to tell the other students what the found out and try to encourage them to help the enviorment as well. The club could also try to research things that would helo the school go green and try to actully make them happen.

    2. High Bridge is really classified as a walking community- that's why we have no busses. So everyone should walk to school sometimes. I do everyday!

  61. we can use all sorts of used things to make art projects.

  62. When I ride my bike I see a lot of trash on the ground. Our school or community should make a group of people and get together every week and walk around town picking up trash. It would be better for the enviroment and for our living.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Our school does a lot for our enviroment not just recycle. Which we do a lot of (there is a recycling bin in every classroom). We are planting a new tree. During Super Storm Sandy a tree fell down in the front of the school, we are replanting it in the same place. But we should save paper or use recycled paper.

  64. if u plant a based lunch u will reduce the ammout of global warming.and rather then drinking a bottled water you can use the schools water fountains

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good thinking. the school tries to buy us water bottles and offer them for 1$ but we can just get a drink from the water fountain. Not only is the school wasting money, there is no need to pay for water when its free!!!!!!!

      Delete
    2. I agree with you james if you have a water fountain in the school why pay for water. Paying for water is a waste of money and plastic

      Delete
    3. You guys are forgetting that the school does this to raise money... And most people don't feel like walking upstairs for a drink and I haven't seen anyone this... I would never buy water there though, you can get it after lunch in the hall or from home if you don't like WARM water.

  65. I think that it is a good idea but instead of keeping it we should recycle it and then use it again and again

  66. Although the school does a lot by inviting envirionmentalists to encourage students to recycle, the school can do much more. The High Bridge Middle School can start an enviromental club. In this club, students could help pick up trash found on the ground or try to find a way to power a light bulb with the wind. Instead of using regular paper, the school can buy recycled paper. It will help save trees, and the recycled paper is much cheaper and much stronger than regular paper. Also, people that do not live far from the school can ride their bike or walk instead of driving. This saves gas and gives less polution to the air.

    1. Lenmy, our school has recycling bins. We have good teachers but I don't think they can think of a way to power light bulbs with the wind, no offense. We're not exactly that into environmental-friendly equipment but it would be cool..

  67. What if our school provided bigger recycling bins at lunch instead of 2 large garbage cans? Therefore, it would be more convenient to recycle and more kids would take the time to do so. Plus, garbage cans wouldn't overflow onto the floor.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yes Laura, I know the school has recycling bins. The recycled items are used to create another item. I do not understand your point with your first sentence. I am just saying that instead of buying new paper from dead trees, just buy recycled paper. It saves money, is better for the envirionment, and is stronger than regular paper. I know I am right about this, so my idea for buying recycled paper is fine. Next, I was giving an example. I know it is not possible to power a light bulb with the wind, but maybe if it was possible the teachers could try to get the members of the Environmental Club to do it. And lastly, I know. Atleast we can try.

  69. We can do rough drafts typed, so we dont use as much paper as handwritten first drafts with lines skipped. This also makes it easier for the student to revise the paper.
We should not use styrofoam lunch trays because they do not decompose. Reusable plastic trays are better.
Using ingredients from local ariea in cafeteria food helps to save gasses from plane engines, as imported foods need a plane ride to transport them.

    ReplyDelete
  70. if our school provided more recycling bins, would it actually do anything??? NO!!!!! Its peoples own choice to whether they want to recycle or not. no matter how many recycling bins we put in our school it will not be a success. Nobody chooses to sort through there lunch and find recyclable materials. the school would only waste money on new recycling bins and this event would have a negative outcome.

  71. It is important to go green because it is good for the enviroment and people. It is important to the enviroment so the air, ground, trees and much more. It is important to the people because if there is poluted air the people would not want to live there or want to even go outside. Those are some important reasons of why to Go Green.

  72. You could join an environmental club. There, activities such as picking up trash at the Colombia Trail could be done. Also, we could learn about endangered animals to see how we can further help them.

  73. Go green is important because it would be good for the envirement and it would make the world a better place by: recycleng, picking up garbge, and saving water.

  74. The highbridge students can help the environment by recycling, reusing, picking up tjrash on the street, and not throwing garbage on the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  75. You can recycle or reuse clothing. There are bins to easily drop clothing in and it is someone's job to recycle it from there. Also, reusing clothing not only saves materials, but it helps the less fortunate.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think this is a great idea, we can reuse paper, cans, and bottles.

  77. A step HBMS can take is all of the studens can write on both sides of there notebooks so the studens don't there paper

    ReplyDelete
  78. We have taken a step towards going green at HBMS by replanting the mongolia tree in the front that had fallen during Sandy. Instead of just taking the fallen tree out and saying "Oh well, that's a shame", we took action and celebrated Arbor with replanting the tree.

    and dont pollute water with
    .oil
    .gas
    .cups
    .bottles
